Different stages of sleep

Sleep is the fundamental anabolic process common to all life forms, plant and animal. In animals, the sleeping state is characterized by an absolute minimal degree of consciousness and decreased responsiveness to the surrounding world.

The first stage is characterized by fewer waves called Alpha waves coming from the brain. (Generally half of what the brain emits when in a restful state)

Stage 2 involves waves at just about 14hz, (sometimes called Spindles) among other patterns; K Complexes and what not.

After that, the third stage is characterized by the same occurrences of stage 2, but with Delta waves being emitted by the brain on a frequent basis. (as often as half the time)

the onset of stage 4 begins when the brain emits delta rhythms more then half the time.

The deepest sleep, Stage 5, is when the dreaming is down. Rapid Eye Movements are usually associated with this stage. These stages of sleep can happen one after another, or they can move fluctuate in patters or cycles.
